Allister F. "Fred" MacDonald
ATKINSON, NH: Allister F. "Fred" MacDonald, 82, passed away on Sunday, July 24th. He was surrounded by his family when he died from complications of ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease).
Fred was born in Boston on January 30, 1929, the first born child of John Francis and Mary Belle (MacLean) MacDonald. Fred leaves his wife Martha Ellen (Glynn) MacDonald and his three children: Ann O'Sullivan and her husband Terry of West Newbury, MA; William MacDonald and his wife Janice of Kittery Point, ME; and Jeannie MacDonald and her husband John Stromgren of Portsmouth, NH; and was the proud "Papa" of seven grandchildren. He is survived by his brothers Jack MacDonald and Thomas Painten. Fred was predeceased by sisters Alice Albanese and Jean Moses and brothers Arthur, Rodney and Wilton.
Fred worked for many years for New England Telephone and continued his telephone career by owning MacDonald Business Telephones for 12 years. He retired in 1995.
Fred and Martha loved their family, friends and community of Atkinson, where they resided since being married in 1954. Along with being named joint Citizen of the Year in 2005, Fred and Martha were the founders and co-hosts of the Atkinson Historical Society's annual Labor Day Antique Car and Tractor Show. In addition, Fred served on the Atkinson Volunteer Fire Department and Atkinson Academy Scholarship Committee, and served as School Clerk, church deacon and trustee.
Fred was a great story teller. Wherever he went, he shared his wit and wisdom. He will be particularly remembered for his children's stories at his church and at his alma mater, the Atkinson Academy.
Fred was a longtime member of the Atkinson Congregational Church and the Haverhill Rotary Club, where he was a Past President, along with being a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow award, the group's highest honor.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in his name be made to the Atkinson Congregational Church Memorial Fund, 101 Main Street, Atkinson, NH 03811; Salvation Army, 395 Main Street, Haverhill, MA 01830; or Compassionate Care ALS, P.O. Box 1052, West Falmouth, MA 02574.
Funeral arrangements will be handled by Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main Street, Haverhill. Calling hours will
be held on Wednesday, July 27th, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service at the Atkinson Congregational Church on Thursday, July 28th at 10:00 a.m. Interment at Atkinson Cemetery.
