Evelyn Jean Fisher Roberts

HERRIN, IL: Evelyn Jean Fisher Roberts died peaceful April 28, 2016 at Herrin Hospital, Herrin, Illinois. Her husband Bronson, daughters Diane and Gail (Roberts) Pierce, son-in-law Greg Pierce, brother, Everett predeceased her.

Born May 21, 1924 in Boston, MA, the daughter of George H. and Marion P. (Godfrey) Fisher, Evelyn graduated Haverhill High School, in 1942 and began work as a telephone operator with AT&T. On May 22, 1950 she married Bronson L. Roberts, settling initially in Salisbury, MA, then moving to Costa Mesa, CA in 1960. They returned to Haverhill, MA in 1969, at which time Evelyn returned to a career with AT&T. After retiring from AT&T in 1986, Evelyn relocated to Clearwater, FL where she served several years as the Secretary of the Sunshine Terrace Condominium Association. In 1999 she relocated with her daughter, Jean to Martinsburg, WV and then Carbondale, IL. She was a longtime member of the White Shrine, Eastern Star and proud to be a Minuteman in the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is lovingly remembered by daughter, LCDR Jean L. Roberts- Houle, USN, NC, retired and spouse HMC Gene Houle, USNR, retired of Carbondale, IL; son, Scott Roberts of Haverhill, MA; granddaughter Christine L. (Houle) Arms and spouse MKC Richard Arms, USCG, great grandson Brandon, great granddaughter Marissa, of Indian Rocks Beach, FL, grandson, Daniel Bronson Houle, of Carbondale, IL.; Sister-in-law, Virginia Fisher of The Villages, FL; and many nieces and nephews.

An accomplished singer since High School, Evelyn participated in many events during her early career with AT&T and was a featured soloist as a member of the First Baptist Church of Haverhill choir and at many nuptials in the New England area. Always ready for any experience and adventure, Evelyn loved to travel, visit historic sites and amusement parks (Disney was a favorite), was an avid reader and loved watching her favorite team, the New England Patriots. One of her favorite activities was to help the Marine Corps League Auxiliary cut out coupons to send to our overseas military and their families. Evelyn loved to entertain her family and friends, and took those who entered her life into her home and her heart.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, June 24th, at 4:00 p.m., at Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main Street, Haverhill. Calling hours will precede the service from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetic Association, 1701 North Beauregard St., Alexandria, VA 22311, or the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, 875 N. Randolph St., Suite 225, Arlington, VA 22203.
