EXETER, NH: Gene Drolet, 80, formerly of Groveland, and husband of Katharine "Kay" (Tyler) Drolet, passed away on Monday, January 9, 2012 at the Exeter Hospital.
Born in Haverhill on July 17, 1931, he was the son of the late Harold and Florence (Kritter) Drolet.
Gene graduated from Haverhill High School, received his BA from the University of Maine, and MBA in Finance from Northeastern University. From 1953-1956 he served as First Lieutenant of the US Army in Saltzburg, Austria. In 1956 Gene began a 33 year career in banking as Senior Vice President and Chief Loan Officer
of the Haverhill National Bank. He was Senior Vice President of Shawmut Bank of Boston and Chairman of Shawmut County Bank of Cambridge. Gene retired as Chairman and CEO of Shawmut County Bank of Southeastern Massachusetts. Following his retirement in 1989, he moved to North Conway and lived there for 20 years where he served for six years as the Town Treasurer.
Throughout his life Gene was very active in community projects. He ran the Haverhill United Fund and was a member of the Haverhill Rotary Club. He was Treasurer and Trustee of the Memorial Hospital in North Conway, Trustee of the Conway Library, and Trustee of the Pequaket Foundation. Gene also served as Vice President of the Cambridge YMCA, the Central Square Business Association, and Chairman of the Board of the Cambridge Salvation Army. He was recognized by the city of Cambridge in 1988 for his leadership and substantial contribution to the 1987 Central Square revitalization project. He is a former president of the Northeast Chapter of the Robert Morris Associates. Gene will be remembered for his passion for hiking and skiing in the White Mountains, gardening, and classical music, but most of all for his love for his family.
Besides his wife of 59 years he is survived by three children: Susan Ferguson and her husband, John of Ridgefield, CT; D. Tyler Drolet and his wife Pam, of West Newbury, MA; Elizabeth Drolet of Arlington, MA. He was the
adored Papa of four beloved grandchildren: John Ferguson, 111, D. Tyler Drolet, Jr., Carolyn Margaret Ferguson, and Emilie Dilyara Tyler Drolet.
