Ghernot L. Knox

HAVERHILL: Ghernot L. Knox, 92, passed away peacefully at his home on June 16, 2014. He was the husband of Erma E. (Dow) Knox.

Born in Madison, ME on April 10, 1922, he was the son of the late Herbert E. and Muriel E. (Armstrong) Knox.

Ghern was educated in Maine and earned his teaching certificate from Presque Isle Normal School. He continued his education earning his BA in Ed. from George Washington University, and his MA in Ed. from Boston University. Teaching was his passion and he dedicated many years to the profession. He taught English for many years at the former Haverhill Trade Schoolbefore his success enabled him to become the Assistant Director of Vocational Education for the state of Massachusetts. Following his retirement he continued to work as a seasonal processor for the IRS in Andover. While teaching in Haverhill, Ghern worked as Vice Pres. of retail stands for the former Wason MacDonald Ice Cream Co.

Ghern was an active member for 70 years at the First Baptist Church where served on the Prudential Committee, Diaconate, taught the men's Bible study, sang in the choir, and played the organ for the Thursday evening service. Ghern's family was one of the founding members of the OTSAGO tribe at Lake Winnipesauke. Ghern served as organist for many years at Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home playing well known hymns and offering peace and comfort to families in their time of loss. He was a member of both the Haverhill and Mass. Teachers Association. He enjoyed traveling with friends, and took one of his more memorable trips visiting Omaha Beach in France.

Besides his wife of seventy years, Ghern is survived by his children, Linda and husband Rev. Dr. Howard Lawrence of Haverhill, Pamela and her husband Steven Irving of Newburyport, Sandra and her husband Phillip Comeau of Newburyport, Gary and his wife Louise Knox of Hampstead; ten grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren and one niece, Nancy McGary of NYC. He was the brother of the late Phyllis McGary.

Relatives and friends are invited to the funeral on Friday, June 20th, at 11:00 a.m., at First Baptist Church. Calling hours Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main Street, Haverhill. Interment at Linwood Cemetery. Donations in Ghern's memory may be made to First Baptist Church, 217 Main Street, Haverhill, MA 01830.
