Helen E. (Chard) Morey

NEWBURYPORT: Helen E. (Chard) Morey, of 160 Old Point Rd., Plum Island, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2009 at her island home.

She was born on her grandparent’s farm in Methuen and raised in Haverhill, a daughter of the late Harold F. and Emma E. Chard. She was the beloved and devoted wife of the late John R. Morey, DMD, who practiced dentistry on Merrimack St., in Haverhill, his entire career.

Mrs. Morey was a graduate of Haverhill High School, Class of 1936, and, of Burdett College in Boston. She met her husband while she worked as an executive secretary for the office of the President of the Christian Science Publishing Society in Boston.  Dr. Morey was a Naval Commander in the U.S. Navy. Soon after they married in 1943, he served in World War 11 in Paris, France. Upon his return, they settled in Bradford
for a period of time and had two children, Dianna and John. In 1956 they moved to Salem, NH where they stayed until retirement age. While in Salem, Mrs. Morey owned and operated the Salem Center Nursery School for many years, and also periodically taught ballroom dancing in the local area. For numerous years she was also the receptionist at her husband’s dental office.

Dr. and Mrs. Morey enjoyed spending time surrounded by family and especially loved spending time at their family beach home on Plum Island, Newburyport. They also enjoyed entertaining family and friends at their beach home. They, along with their children, also enjoyed numerous years roller skating at Skateland in Haverhill. She was also and avid ballroom dance enthusiast, and, in later years danced with the Jo Bridges Line Dancing Group.

Over the years, her memberships included the Haverhill Women’s City Club Life Member, Salem Chapter of Eastern Star, Salem, NH, National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution, Newburyport Golden Ages, Past President of the Wives of Merrimack Valley Dental Association, the Plum Island Beautification Society, Past President of the Windites-Federation Women’s Club, and, a member of the first Church of Christ, Scientist, Boston and Newburyport. She was also a past Girl Scout leader in Haverhill, MA.

She was predeceased by her brother, Arthur Gardner Chard, and, her daughter Dianna Claire Farr.

She was the loving mother of John A. Morey and his wife, Nancy of Merrimack, NH and their son Devin John Morey. She was also survived by her son-in-law, Howard Farr of Dryden, NY, and his children Robert Farr of the U.S. Navy, and, Sandra (Farr) Sorensen with her husband Michael and their five children – Kelsey, Noah, Emma, Gabriella, and Elise of Ithaca, NY.

Friends are invited to the funeral Monday, April 27th ,at 10:00 a.m., at Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main Street, Haverhill. Interment at Elmwood Cemetery. Calling hours Sunday 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations, made in memory of Helen Morey, may be made to the donor’s choice, or, the Merrimack Valley Hospice, 360 Merrimack Street, Bldg. 9, Lawrence, MA 01843.
