James E. Steele

GROVELAND: James E. Steele, 62, husband of Patricia A. (Wyatt) Steele, passed away suddenly on October 7, 2017 at Holy Family Hospital at Merrimack Valley.

Born in Dayton, OH on October 15, 1954, he was the son of the late Charles W. and Helen Marie (Jolly) Steele.

Jim graduated from Northrup High School in Fort Wayne, IN in 1972. He attended Indiana University, Blooming, IN, from 1975 to 1978, receiving the B.A. with distinction in English, and again from 1980 to 1983, receiving the M.F.A. in Fiction Writing. In 1997 he pursued a PhD in History after completion of a Masters in History from the University of Massachusetts, Boston. Jim taught English as a graduate student at Indiana University, later teaching a diverse range of subjects: Fiction Writing, Computer, Native American Indian Studies, and the Civil War. For the past 14 years, Jim has worked in I.T. Management at Wentworth Institute of Technology, Boston.

In addition to his wife of twenty-five years, Jim is survived by his children Anna, Samuel and Sarah Steele, granddaughter Caroline Steele; siblings, Bill (Dallas, TX), Richard (Juneau, AK), and Lisa Fitzwater (Frankfort, KY), and several nieces and nephews.

A kind heart, an open hand, devoted husband and father, Jim had an endless plethora of interests. Not a day passed by that he did not immerse his family with his wit and charming sarcasm. His last weeks were spent singing and reciting his poetry to his six week old grandchild, sweet Caroline.
Jim was notoriously incapable of keeping what he learned of the world to himself and made a point to share his wealth of information to the
6 a.m. crew at the Groveland Dog Park. One of a kind, a legend to his family, he will be forever missed.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral on Saturday, October 14th at 1:00 p.m. at Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main Street, Haverhill. Calling hours
Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Donations in James’ name may be made to the West Newbury Fire Company, 401 Main Street, West Newbury, MA 01985.

Online condolences may be sent to www.dcsfuneralhome.com
