Joseph "Norman" Comeau
Joseph "Norman" Comeau, 89, died peacefully with his family by his side, March 3, 2011 at The Merrimack Valley Hospice House, in Haverhill, Massachusetts. He was born on August 26, 1921, in Meteghan Centre, Nova Scotia, Canada. He was the son of the late L. Louis Comeau and Angelina
(Thibodeau, Comeau) Amirault. He was lovingly raised by friends of the family, John and Mary Robichaud until he came to Haverhill, at the age of 14, to join his mother and her new family. He attended Tilton School and graduated from Haverhill High School / Trade School in 1941.
He enlisted in The US Navy in 1942 and was decorated for his service to the Naval 63rd Construction Battalion"SeaBees" Division in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. Returning home following the conclusion of WWII in late 1946, he began a long career as a member of Sheetmetal Workers Local 17, Boston. He supervised the HVAC construction for many major buildings, including the Prudential Building and the John Hancock Tower in Boston's Back Bay area. His engineering skills led him to the field of Air Balancing Engineering. His meticulous, professional approach to his work led to an expansive client list, including much of the new construction at Harvard Law School, Brandeis University, Amherst College and Boston Children's Hospital.
At the age of 51, Norman made a life changing decision to move back to his birthplace in Meteghan Centre, Nova Scotia with his wife Alma. There, he pursued a new career as President and Owner of Robert Long N.S. Real Estate Ltd. That company was recognized throughout the Province for its integrity and service.
In 2005, Norman and his wife moved to Salem, NH, where he enjoyed retirement, playing cribbage daily with his friends, and visiting with his children, grandchildren, relatives and friends. He was a member of the Canadian Legion, Richelieu Club, Danseurs Acadien Square Dancers, and Salem Senior Center. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Alma (Boisselle), a daughter, Claire, of Ashland, MA, three sons,
David and his wife Helen Comeau of Sterling, MA, Peter and his wife Lorene Comeau of Andover, MA, and Phillip and his wife Sandra Comeau of Newbury, MA. He leaves six grandchildren, Scott, Leah, Andrew, Steve, Michelle, and Jill Comeau. He is survived by two brothers, Edward and Robert Amirault. He was predeceased by one sister Lucy Comeau, and two brothers, Leo Comeau and Donald Amirault.
Relatives and friends are invited to the memorial service on Saturday, March 19th at 11:00 A.M., at Mary Queen of Peace Church, 200 Lawrence St., Salem, NH. Calling hours Friday, March 18th from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main Street, Haverhill, MA.
