Martha (Riesen) Metcalf
GROVELAND: Martha (Riesen) Metcalf, 72, wife of the late Peter B. Metcalf, died peacefully on April 3, 2011 at Merrimack Valley Hospice House surrounded by those she loved.
Born in Union, NJ on February 23, 1939, Martha was the daughter of the late William E. and Ruth E. (Dunbrack) Riesen
Martha graduated from Haverhill High School, Class of 1957 and continued her education graduating from Eastern Baptist College where she earned her BA in Psychology in 1961. Additionally, she received her teacher certificate enabling her to teach in Haverhill for a brief time before raising her family. Martha worked part-time for seventeen years as Children's Librarian at the Groveland Library before her
retirement in 1995. She was an active member for more than sixty years of the First Baptist Church where she was a member of the choir, Sunday school teacher and member of the Diaconate. Her many interests included sewing, quilting and gardening.
Martha is survived by her daughters, Susan C. and her husband CDR. Steven Gardiner of Boxford, Sandra Philpott and her husband Herb of Waltham; grandson, Ryan Philpott; brother, John Riesen and his wife Grace of Storrs, CT; sister, Elaine Trask of Paradise Valley, AZ and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, April 9th, at 10:00 am, at First Baptist Church in Haverhill. Calling hours at Dole, Childs& Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main Street, Haverhill will be Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Interment at Belleville Cemetery in Newburyport will be private.
