Ralph D. Brophy
HAVERHILL: Ralph D. Brophy, 83, formerly of Somerville and Woburn, passed away on February 6, 2013 at the Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital with his loving wife, Elaine M. (Cagnina) Brophy, by his side.
Born in Medford on September 9, 1929 Ralph was the son of the late Albert C. and Miriam E. (Fish) Brophy.
Ralph was raised and educated in Somervillebefore entering the U.S. Army where he earned his Parachute and Glider Wings, and served during the Korean War. As a member of the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team he made two combat jumps into North Korea under heavy enemy fire. Among his personal awards was the Korean Service Medal with four Bronze Service Stars and Arrowhead.
Upon his discharge Ralph joined, and became a life member of, Local #18, International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers. During his career of thirty-five years Ralph worked mostly in the Boston area. Following his marriage, he moved to Woburn and raised his family.
Along with his wife of fifty-two years, Ralph is survived by his son, Ralph “David” Brophy, Jr., his wife Christine and their sons Tanner, Evan and Lowell of Montgomery Village, MD; daughter, Jeri A. Brophy and her life partner Georgene Fontana of Myrtle Beach, SC; brothers, Kenneth Brophy and his wife Elsie of Woburn, William Brophy and his wife Bea of Worcester; sisters, Barbara Greene of Nashua, NH, Cathy Letendre of Kissimmee, FL; and several nieces and nephews. Ralph was the brother of the late Alfred Brophy, James Brophy, and Robert Brophy.
The service at Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main St., Haverhill, MA will be private and at the convenience of the family. Donations in his memory may be made to www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
