Richard E. Becker

HAVERHILL: Richard E. Becker, 87, died suddenly at his home on May 12, 2010.

Born on July 12, 1922, Mr. Becker was the son of the late Ernest A. and Leola B. (Weeks) Becker.

Mr. Becker graduated from Haverhill High School, Class of 1940, and continued his education at Bentley College where he received his degree in accounting in 1942. Richard honorably served overseas as a Storekeeper 1/c with the U. S. Navy during the war. Initially he was self-employed as an accountant in Haverhill, and then went on to work at the Faulkner Hospital and Norwood Hospital. Richard is a life member of the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church where he served as treasurer of the trustees, and Sunday School Superintendent. He has been active in Boy Scouts since 1933 serving with the former Lone Tree Council, and then as assistant treasurer of the Yankee Clipper Council. He was founder of the Pentucket Educational and Charitable Foundation, and was a member of the Haverhill Historical
Society, Friends of the Haverhill Public Library, and Saggehew Lodge A.F. & A.M.

Richard is survived by his longtime and close friend Ruth Whittier of Bradford, and his many friends made over the years from his close association with his church and scouting.

Friends are invited to the funeral Tuesday, May 18th, 11:00 a.m. at the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church. Interment at Linwood Cemetery will be private. Arrangements by Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main Street, Haverhill. Donations in his memory may be made to Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, 471 Main Street, Haverhill, MA 01830, or Yankee Clipper Council, BSA, 36 Amesbury Road, Haverhill, MA 01830.
