Richard G. Grant
HAVERHILL: Richard G. Grant, 81, husband of Barbara C. (Tate) Grant, went to be with the Lord on February 11, 2011. Richard passed away at the Hannah Duston Skilled Nursing Facility surrounded by his family, Merrimack Valley Hospice Team, and the fine folks at Hannah Duston, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
Born in Haverhill, and raised in Plaistow, Richard was the son of the late George L. and Nettie H. (Eaton) Grant. He graduated from Pollard School in Plaistow, and Sanborn Seminary in Kingston, NH in 1947. He graduated from Kings Point United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY in 1951. Richard sailed in the merchant marine as a deck officer with Grace Lines, US Lines, and Robin Lines. During the Korean conflict he served with the US Navy as a division officer aboard the USS Tripoli-CVE 64 which represented some of his fondest memories. He remained in the Naval Reserve retiring as Lt. Commander.
His work life was spent as a salesman for Standard Register Company of Dayton, OH. He worked in the Greater Boston area as a professional sales representative for 27 years and achieved many of the highest sales honors before his retirement in 1991.
Richard was most proud of his family, and especially enjoyed spending time with his grand children. He was a gentle, kind, and giving individual with integrity and honesty as well as having a kind word for all. He attended the West Congregational Church, and his favorite hobby was home gardening
Richard is survived by his wife of 58 years; son, Jimmy Grant of Haverhill. Richard was pre-deceased by his son,
Glenn D. Grant, in 2008. Other survivors include his
granddaughters, Dallas L. Grant and Jasmine R. Grant of Haverhill, Deanna Pothier of NH; daughter-in-law Sandra (Berry) Grant of Weare, NH; step grandsons, Bourne Spooner and Porter Spooner and his wife Cindy; eight great grandchildren and nephew, David Buzzell of Desert Hot Springs, CA. He was predeceased by his son Glenn D. Grant in
2008, and step brother and his wife John and Grace Buzzell of CA.
Mr. Grant's family would like to thank all the folks at Greystone Farms Assisted Living in Salem, NH, the folks at Northeast Rehabilitation in Salem, NH, and the fine staff at Hannah Duston Skilled Nursing Facility of Haverhill for making his journey home one of peace and comfort.
Friends are invited to the funeral Wednesday, February 16th, at 10:00 am, at Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main St., Haverhill. Interment at Elmwood Cemetery. Calling hours Tuesday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
